Downtown Columbus

Downtown Columbus is for artists, gardeners, history buffs, clubbers, gourmands, shoppers, sports fans, bookworms, and weekend warriors. It is for residents and visitors, new arrivals and fourth- or fifth-generation families, kids and grandparents. From historic renovations to new entertainment districts to revitalized communities, downtown Columbus is alive with excitement! Whatever your interest, whatever your fancy, the neighborhoods of downtown Columbus are waiting to fulfill your dreams. Walk for half an hour in this city, and you will experience two or three neighborhoods, each a colorful, completely unique piece of the collage.

One of Columbus’s most exciting redeveloped neighborhoods is the Arena District. Centered around Nationwide Arena, which is home to the Blue Jackets NHL team, the Destroyers Arena Football team and countless concerts and shows, the District is also the location of 75 acres of businesses, housing and entertainment. Each year, over 1,000 new housing units are developed in this District alone! The popularity of downtown living is definitely on the rise with the development of fantastic condos and lofts in the Arena District, as well as in other downtown areas, such as the Brewery District, Center City and the Scioto Mile. The Scioto Mile itself is another focal point of downtown’s rebirth, as several parks and promenades have made the area a desirable location for businesses and residences.

Another exciting development for Columbus residences is the new “8 on the Square” on the corner of Broad and High Streets. When completed, this business area will remind visitors and residents alike of New York City’s Times Square, with housing, ground-level retail, video screens, a rolling ticker tape and specialty offices.

Artists will feel right at home in the Short North Arts District, Columbus’s pulsing arts center. Known as the “SoHo of the Midwest,” this District features every type of art imaginable, and some you never even dreamed of. If you’re up for a night of “gallery hopping,” you can fuel up at one of the Short North’s many one-of-a-kind restaurants, like Martini’s or Haiku, offering the best Pan Asian cuisine. If, after perusing all of the fine art, you are up for some excitement, you can partake in the community’s vibrant nightlife at The Burgandy Room or Spice Bar. The Short North also plays host to the Gallery Hop, a popular event that is held on the first Saturday of each month and serves as a great “date night” for many Columbus residents.

Just northwest of the Short North Arts District is Victorian Village, one of Columbus’s many sparkling historic districts. Featuring grand homes in architectural styles such as Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Tudor and Richardsonian Romanesque, this neighborhood’s beauty and history is unparalleled. The best way to explore this neighborhood is to join in the annual Victorian Village Tour of Homes & Gardens each September. This self-guided tour allows you to explore the community’s most beautiful homes and gardens, as well as gather design and renovation ideas. Another unique piece of this wonderful neighborhood is Goodale Park, one of the nation’s first “pleasure grounds” and the inspiration for the modern municipal park. Goodale Park is also center stage for the popular and annual ComFest.

Originally home to German settlers who purchased lots from a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner, German Village is another of Columbus’s gorgeous neighborhoods, a 233-acre historic district featuring old-fashioned brick roads, where “the old meets the new.” This charming community welcomes you with a Visitor Center, where you can explore background information and note architectural high points to seek out, or browse the gift shop. German Village also is home to many ethnic and specialty shops, galleries and restaurants, such as Katzinger’s Delicatessen, Schmidt's Restaurant and Sausage Haus, Thurman’s, Helen Winnemore Craft, The Book Loft, and G. Duncan Fine Art.

The residents of another of Columbus’s historic districts, Italian Village, have been dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of this community since the early 1970s. Located just east of the Short North Arts District, Italian Village offers picturesque urban panoramas and a variety of exciting events, such as the Grillmasters Festival at North Market, the Doo Dah Parade and the Italian Festival. Italian Village also epitomizes many of the city’s latest revitalization projects, such as the new Jeffrey Place urban neighborhood, featuring lofts, townhomes, coffee shops, pubs, office space and retailers, or the Mona Lisa Condos or Urban Flats condo development.

With the dynamic collision of arts, history, chic style, cuisine and a hopping nightlife in the new downtown Columbus, the city has truly become a metropolis for the 21st century and beyond!
